In 1946, aftermath Potsdam Declaration, International Military Tribunal for the Far East was officially established by a proclamation of General Douglas MacArthur. The purpose of the Tribunal was to prosecute Japanese leaders for crimes against humanity, crimes against peace and war crimes committed before and during the Second World War. The Tokyo Charter providing the structure, jurisdiction, and the functioning of the Tribunal was largely based on the Nuremberg Charter.

In the 13th annual session of Model Courts of Justice, participants will witness one of the landmark trials of the past. Twenty-eight political or military leaders of Japan were charged with fifty-five separate counts. However, there is still disagreement as to whether the trials were victors’ justice, or they were necessary for the development of international criminal law and the progress of the justice.
